Joe Duff, or the Diet Chef on YouTube, makes videos about how to find keto diet food at chain stores and restaurants. The high-fat diet can be expensive, but Duff shows how you can eat keto on a budget by shopping at Aldi. The grocery store has amassed a loyal following because they offer many items at a fraction of the price as other stores.
As Duff explains, people adopt the keto diet in different ways. Some strictly adhere to carb counting while others are more flexible and count “net carbs” or carbs minus the amount of fiber in a food. So, a slice of bread with 10 grams of carbs and 5 grams of fiber would only contain 5 grams of net carbs. Duff’s grocery haul includes items for both strict and flexible dieters.
He was lucky enough to nab the store’s L’Oven Fresh Zero Net Carb Bread which is often sold out.
“These can make really great keto peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, low carb French toast, keto grilled cheese, keto BLTs. There is a ton of stuff you can do with this,” he says.
Duff also shares some of his favorite keto snacks, like cheese crisps, ice cream, and pork rinds. But Duff’s protein staples were the most impressive. For example, Ahi Tuna steaks cost only $4.35 per pack and are perfect to make poke bowls using cauliflower rice. Grass fed strip steaks cost only $9.99 per pound, and frozen shrimp was just $6.99 for 3/4 of a pound.
Of course, there were numerous other keto staples, like almond milk, cheese, and butter–all reasonably priced.
